Cloud repatriation pays off when your data is large (50+ TB), accessed frequently, and unlikely to shrink. The break-even point depends on three factors: egress fees (one-time), on-premises hardware cost (amortized), and the ongoing monthly savings from eliminating cloud storage and access fees.
For datasets over 100 TB that are accessed regularly, on-premises NAS is typically 3-5x cheaper over three years. The egress fee is a one-time cost that gets recovered within months through lower operating costs.
